Independent Living Arrangements

The Individualized Home Support (IHS) Program is designed to provide in-home assistance to people who live independently in their own home.  People who are supported by the IHS program receive supports based on their Level of Need.  Individuals may need support ranging from as few as 5 hours per week to as many as 50 hours per week.  Participants of the IHS program rent or own their own home and pay the costs associated with living expenses through wages, entitlements and housing subsidy money made available through the Department of Developmental Services (DDS).

The Continuous Residential Support Program (CRS) is designed to provide in-home assistance to individuals 24 hours per day.  The individuals who participate in this program rent their own apartments.  Often they have roommates that also need supports.  Individuals share expenses and pay the cost associated renting/owning a home with wages, entitlements and housing subsidy money made available through DDS.

Individuals participating in the Independent Living program may need support with

  • Banking and balancing their check book
  • Grocery shopping and meal preparation
  • Home care
  • Health service coordination and taking their medications
  • Crisis and behavior health management
  • Training in Self Advocacy
  • Benefits management
  • Accessing community resources

The Adult Service Program staff work collaboratively with the individual, family, guardian and DDS to identify specific support needs and to develop a plan to assure the individual lives a healthy, involved and fully integrated life.

CRI supports approximately 50 individuals living in their own homes in Connecticut in the Independent Living Arrangement Program.

Funding for staff supports can be provided through DDS, the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) or private pay.  Individuals receiving funding through DDS must be enrolled in the Waiver Program.
